Good Friday

This week is always a week of reflection.  I pause

from the jam-and-fray of the day-to-day and pray on

the path of Jesus of Nazareth - the committment,

the courage, the craziness - quite a week.

A New Year and a New View on Resolutions

A New Year and a New View on Resolutions
I am not one for New Year’s Resolutions.  I never have been.  I know it is the thing to do and I feel a little awkward admitting this, but I kind of thought Dick Clark made all of this up!  So, I did a little checking and it turns out that New Year’s goes back some 4000 years to pagan ritual.  The Romans turned it into a serious wicked party time and historians suggest that reflecting on our sins of the past year and promising to do better in the new year grew out of early Christian tradition.  So, why not just pick something and fill in the blank?  “Starting on January 1st I will ____________________ (fill in the blank.)”
Let’s see . . . Okay, starting this year I will go to the doctor before I get really sick.  This is a great resolution!!  Not a great resolution, but it is a start.  Last October I came down with a really bad cold.  Started in my head and then dropped to my chest.  Then it settled in my throat and left ear for a little while and then again to my chest.  This went on for weeks and weeks!!  I was genuinely engaged in work, projects, and living in general and I just didn’t take, or make, the time for the doctor until I literally couldn’t get out of bed one morning in December.  Really not the way to take care of myself and of course not the way I would have anyone I love behave if they were sick.  I can definitely do better.
Resolutions should be interesting and specific and positive -- like lose 20 lbs. on The 90 Day Challenge by Visalus or run the Boston Marathon or live proactively for excellent health.  OK, I will weave those together and resolve to eat for health, exercise five days a week, and be smoke free!  That’s a tall order, but envisioning my life this way feels good.  This will be a process for 2012.
1.        Each day I will do what I can to further the process.  I will eat a healthy nutritious breakfast.  If life gets too hectic and I miss my healthy breakfast then I will get back on track with it as soon as I can.  I will encourage myself with kindness and the belief that I can, and will, live a better life.
2.        Each day I enjoy the intentional breathing and stretching of hatha yoga.  Though sometimes I get busy, distracted or just plain stuck on the couch reading a great book, this year I will make yoga an essential part of beginning my day -- this way I will not give anything else a chance to distract me before I give myself the time to take care of myself. (Gotta say this “first thing in the morning” is making me a little nervous, but like I said, this is going to be a process!)
3.       Each day I will bank smoke-free time and create a tool box to live smoke-free.  Having been a smoker since conception, this part of my resolution will be the greatest opportunity for change.  My parents were big-time smokers and the world was a different place for smokers then.  There were ashtrays in movie theaters, on airplanes, and well, just about everywhere.  You could even smoke as a patient in the hospital!!  The world has changed and I can change, too.  Right????  This lingering and escalating “respiratory infection” is my wake up call.  I had some great coaching around this earlier this year and have a deep understanding of how connected I am to this addictive habit.  But what health and freedom I can add to my life by living smoke-free!!
So, this is great!  Making a resolution has taken a lot of thought for me -- as a person who doesn’t make resolutions.  I have set the bar high enough to create real and sustainable change in the quality of my life.  I have committed to living this resolution as a process, so if I mess up I can jump right back into the process.  I will be failure free and live with degrees of success.  And I have chosen an area of my life that I have good experience with and a good understanding of how and why I have not treated myself to the healthiest choices in the past.
Living healthier will support so many other areas of my life.  It may not be noticeable at first, but certainly the positive actions of healthier living, day by day, will positively influence my world.  Whether like the ripple effect or the butterfly effect, shifts will happen.  I will keep a journal for my healthy choices resolution and from time to time I will reflect on how the rest of my life is being affected.  I am looking forward to the process of living 2012.  I hope you are, too!!!  xoxo

There are so many things I could do better!!  How do I pick???  How do you pick???  Seriously, how do you pick?  Email me at jillywstafford@gmail.com and tell me what your resolution is and how you picked it!!  So, now I am feeling very excited about the emails I am going to get from you amazing women!  And you inspire me.  I have to say that I was able to propel myself into a new world of possibilities in 2011!!  It was a year full of opportunity and discovery.  I could have predicted that, because I created it.  Knowing you are out there creating opportunity and possibility and building your dreams reassures me that there are awesome people doing what they can each and every day to make this world a better place for all of us.  Cheers and keep building your dreams!
